Phil Heath Retains His Title in 2013

And so it all ends at the Orleans Arena as Phil Heath defeats Kai Greene and Dennis Wolf to win his 3rd consecutive Mr Olympia title. I must say that the crowd favorite this year was Kai Greene. They seem to love the freaky body parts, his crazy lats, over arching biceps and sheer size weighing in around 300 pounds. The stage became so hot during the final moments before the pose down when the head judge placed Kai in dead center. The crowd went wild. This is because typically the judges put the ultimate winner in the middle for final comparison against the rest of the field. But it seemed that the judges did that to roar up the crowd or to reaffirm their decision and look at Kai vs Phil one last time.

Phil Heath was pronounced winner and deservedly so. He couldn't contain his ecstasy- he graciously accepted his award as Kai turned his back away from Phil and looked down defeated for the 2nd year running probably wondering what he needs to do to dethrone Phil and achieve his life dream of been crowned Mr Olympia.

The Gift then gave an emotional speech and dedicated his victory to his wife who had battled and won a title of her own- Mrs Phil Heath had fought hard- defeated cancer and won Life. What more could the Heath's ask for- maybe another title in 2014.

We will find out what adversities and challenges will be in the mix in 2014 and you can count on Mr Olympia Tribute Online to bring you the coverage.

Prejudging First Impression

Based on the call outs last night it looks like Phil Heath is the man to beat. The judges call-out was made up as follows:

  1. Dennis Wolf
  2. Jay Cutler
  3. Dexter Jackson
  4. Shawn Rhoden
  5. Kai Green
  6. Phil Heath

They moved the competitors around with Phil and Kai in the center of the 6 men line up. They then placed Shawn Rhoden and Jay Cutler on the outside of Kai Green with Dennis Wolf and Dexter Jackson on the other side of Phil Heath.

After a series of comparative poses they asked Phil, Kai and Dennis to step out. Generally this means that the judges are happy with what they have seen so far from those they ask to step out. Next, they called out Roelly Winklaar, Lionel Beyeke and Mamdouh Elssbiay to join Dexter Jackson, Jay Cutler and Shawn Rhoden. But after just a few poses they moved Shawn Rhoden out and left Jay Cutler in the middle.

What was most interesting as the night progressed is the fact that they called out Dennis Wolf, Shawn Rhoden, Kai Green and Phil Heath, but then without even asking them to pose- they asked Phil Heath to step back out and replaced him with Dexter Jackson.

Based on first impression, I believe that the final line up for the top awards will mostly likely resemble the clues that the judges gave us on Friday night. Looking forward to Saturday as Mr Olympia 2013 is crowned. Stay Tuned.

Competition Day- How it works

The initial round is known as the Prejudging round.  In this phase the judges look at all the qualified bodybuilders and have a look at their overall physique by comparing them against each other on stage through a series of call-outs for comparisons. This stage often gives clues as to who the judges are considering for the top 6.

The final rounds then looks at specific components of the physical body of each of the individual competitors. The scoring is about getting as low score as possible- that is - the lower your score the better.

Round 1: Symmetry

In this round the judges’ focus on the overall symmetry of the athlete’s body, asking them to make various quarter turn pose.

 Round 2: Muscularity

Each competitor goes through the mandatory poses. 7 pose exactly. Each competitor is called out 1 by 1 to pose for the judges.

1.       Front Double Biceps

2.       Side Chest

3.       Side Triceps

4.       Back Double Bicep

5.       Back Lateral Spread

6.       Abs and Thigh

7.       Most Muscular Pose

Round 3: Individual Routine

Here each athlete prepares their own routine with their own choice of music and pose the way they want to pose. The Athlete usually exhibits their greatest strengths and hide their weakest body parts through their routines.

Round 4: Pose Down

This is the final round where the top 6 contenders pose together for the judges to have one final look of comparison before submitting their scorecards.

Welcome to the Candidates for Joe Weider's 49th Edition of Mr Olympia

Today, we begin our coverage of Mr Olympia 2013 by introducing you to some of the serious contenders at this year's competition in no particular order.

Branch WarrenGreat bodybuilder. Claims to train harder than everyone else. Solid work ethics. Clever guy. Placed 5th last year. His best finish at Mr Olympia was 2nd place in 2009. He's strong, tough guy to beat when on form.

Victor Martinez: The Dominican Dominator as he is affectionately known by. Victor is from Dominican Republic and made his mark in 2007 when he finished runner up to Jay Culter by just 4 points. Victor has been a serious contender at most of the Mr Olympia that he has competed in throughout his career. He has gone down in size as a result of back to back injuries. He will be hoping to peak right on song to have any chance of a top 10 finish.

Cedric McMillan : What a mean looking guy. This guy looks like he could eat you alive. He is scary and trains even more insanely. Great structure and can pose a threat if he gets everything in on time. He's the new kid on the block and his future looks bright. This will be Cedric's first appearance on the Olympia stage and he will be aiming to finish inside the top 16 at the very least.

Dennis Wolf: aka the Big Bad Wolf. Dennis has been in and around the top 16 since 2006. He is one consistent guy. He has competed 7 times in a role at Mr Olympia. The big bad Wolf is a very strong guy and an even stronger competitor. Watch out for where he finishes in 2013. His best finish at Mr Olympia was 4th in 2008, but Dennis has also finish inside the top 6 on 5 occasions out of the last 7 Mr Olympia.

Dexter Jackson: Another strong contender at any Mr Olympia. Dexter has competed at the highest level of Mr Olympia enjoying the most successful season in 2008 where he beat Jay Cutler and took the overall prize and title. Since then Dexter has been trying to regain his title. This year he will try to finish as high as possible. The blade as he is known in bodybuilding circles will most likely finish inside the top 6 unless is form is completely off. If his form is on point then he will be very difficult to beat.

Shawn Rhoden: Shawn aka Flexatron- half human- half machine has come through the ranks as a serious contender after placing 3rd last year. He also won the Arnold classic in 2012 and he is definitely a threat. This will be Shawn's 3rd appearance at Mr Olympia and he will be ready to pounce on any errors by Phil and Kai the overwhelming favorites at this stage.

Kai Greene: This guy is a monster. He is often called the Predator because of his uncanny muscular development. He has massive proportions of every muscle group. Kai is a great athlete and he loves philosophy and art. These areas comes through in his posing routine and his approach to life. Down to earth kind of guy. He has increased his mass this year - the big question is will he be able to peak in time for this year's edition of Mr Olympia. If the answer is YES, then we may very likely see the 14th Mr Olympia in the form of Kai Greene.

Jay Cutler: Jay Cutler is still the crowd favorite because of his personality and his consistency in getting results. He has been competing at the Olympia stage for over 10 years. He is 4 times Mr Olympia and was the man who dethrone 8 times Mr Olympia Ronnie Coleman in 2006. Jay won in 2006, 2007, came 2nd to Dexter Jackson in 2008, but got redemption in 2009 and again defended his title in 2010. He lost in 2011 to his friend Phil Heath whom he had introduced to professional bodybuilding back in early 2000. He was not on stage last year due to injuries. Jay is itching to get back on stage and back on top this year. If Jay is successful he will become the only Mr. Olympia to have lost his title regained it lost it and regained it again.

Phil Heath: The current Mr Olympia champion and undoubtedly the man to beat at this year's contest. He is called the "Gift" for his genetics. His record at Mr. Olympia is amazing.

2012 - Overall Champion

2011 - Overall Champion

2010- Runner Up (lost to Jay Cutler)

2009- 5th

2008- 3rd (First Appearance at Mr Olympia)There has been a lot of talk on the bodybuilding forums that Phil Heath has maxed out his potential and just cannot get any better than he already looks. True or False everyone else will have to be in the best possible shape of their life to have any chance of knocking him down.
